Our Business   -   Stairway   -   Stair Coverings

"Stairs take a lot of abuse, while serving as decorative focal points.
Let K&K Floors Wholesale, Inc. cover your stairs with hardwood, laminate, or carpet. No matter what kind of stairs you may have, we know how to cover them professionally."

Code Requirements:

Codes specify stair dimensions, such as minimum width, and allowable angle. The requirements differ for main stairs, and service stairs. A stairway usually requires about 3 feet wide and 10 to 12 feet long. Local codes specify the acceptable height, and depth of each step. To a significant degree, the rise, and the run determine the safety of a stairway. Most codes specify the maximum rise as 7 ½ inches, and the minimum tread width as between 10 and 11 inches.

Types of Stairs:

  • Boxed (both sides are blocked by wall).
  • One side open ( either left or right side is opened).
  • Both sides open.
  • Both sides open with spiral.

Types of Installation on stair coverings:

Hardwood

  • strips (inexpensive).
  • 1 piece tread, and riser (expensive but most durable).
  • 1 piece tread, and luwon (paint the luwon).

Carpet:

  • Berber(tight loop).
  • Plush(regular).

Repairing the squeaky, or loose stairs:

From the top

  • With nails: Angle the nails in opposite directions. Set heads, and fill the holes with putty.
  • With screws: Drill pilot, and countersink holes. Tighten screws, and fill the holes.
  • With wedges: Remove any trim molding, and drive small, glue-coated wedges between the tread and the risers. After the glue dries, cut off the wedges that flush with the surface. Cover the gaps with decorative molding.

From the bottom

  • With cleats: Position a glue-coated cleat against the tread, and screw it into the riser.
